Holi is a renowned festival in India. It is also known as the festival of colors. Both children and elders celebrate this festival with great joy. Holi is a beautiful festival that brings friends and family together. People forget their stress and problems and enjoy playing with the Holi colors.

The story of why is Holi celebrated is interesting. In the Satya yuga, the earliest age of human evolution on Earth, there was a demon king named Hiranyakashyap. He never worshipped Lord Vishnu, the protector of the Universe. Hiranyakashyap always thought of himself as the greatest one in the whole universe.

On the other hand, Prahlad, the son of Hiranyakashyap, is a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. The little boy Prahlad always sang of Lord Vishnu’s greatness and worshipped him with intense devotion.

However, the devotion of his son Prahlad towards Lord Vishnu irritated Hiranyakashyap. He thought to teach him a lesson that would make him forget about Vishnu and accept Hiranyakashyap as the greatest one.

Accordingly, the demon king invited his sister Holika. Holika had a boon from Lord Brahma that fire would not harm her. Hiranyakashyap and Holika plan to burn Prahlad in fire and threaten him to forget his devotion to Lord Vishnu.

Accordingly, a big pyre is set up and the fire is lit. Holika sits on the fire with Prahlad in her lap. Little Prahlad keeps praying to Lord Vishnu all time he is sitting on her lap. With the protection of Vishnu, the fire could not do any harm to Prahlad.

Instead, Holika gets burned in the fire and dies. That event is celebrated as the Holika Dahan on the day before Holi. This marks the end of evil and the beginning of good. This is the reason why is Holi celebrated.
