Story:
One day, Shri Krishna along with his brother Balarama saw a few brahmans performing Vedic Sacrifices. Few other people cleaned and decorated the whole Brindavan with beautiful flowers.
The little Shri Krishna on curiosity goes to his father, Nanda Maharaja, and asked, “My dear father, why are we decorating the whole Brindavan and preparing for prayers?”
At first, Maharaja Nanda did not answer lord Krishna’s question thinking that little Krishna was too young to understand the reason behind these activities.
But as Shri Krishna had requested his father again to answer him, Nanda Maharaja replied, “My little boy, we are arranging these activities as a part of prayers to the God Indra. We perform these prayers every time and it is more or less a part of our tradition. God Indra blessed Vrindavan with sufficient rainfall this year and which indeed helped us for successful agricultural activities. As we produced a good amount of crop due to sufficient rainfall, the whole village is celebrating and also performing these sacrifices to thank God Indra.”
Shri Krishna who believed in karma told that “My dear father, but this is just a duty of God Indra to provide sufficient rainfall. He is just performing his activities on the order of Lord Vishnu. Instead of offering prayers to God Indra, why don’t we offer our prayer to Govardhana Giri which gives everything?
Krishna also said, “All our cows who give us milk depend on this mountain for grass. We also drink river water which is coming from this mountain. We are getting many fruits and vegetables from the forest of this mountain. So, in many ways, we all are depending on the Govardhana Giri in every aspect of our life.”
Everyone in the Brindavan agreed with the words of Shri Krishna that they are directly dependent on the Govardhana Giri. So, they wanted to offer prayers to Govardhana Giri instead of to God Indra. Nanda Maharaja along with all other people of his village went to Govardhana mountain and started offering their prayers.
On seeing the people offering prayers to the Govardhana Giri instead of him, God Indra got furious and wanted to teach a lesson to the Brindavan people. He failed to realize that the Shri Krishna is no one else but the Supreme Lord Vishnu. He made his clouds to pour heavy rain with thunderstorms in Brindavan.
Soon there began a violent thunderstorm. It continued for many days and the whole Brindavan was flooded with water. People started panicking as there was no shelter for them now. They worried that this was the punishment from God Indra as they have made him angry by not offering prayers.
Then Nanda Maharaja and other people decided to request God Indra to accept their apologies. But Lord Krishna told his father and other people that “My Dear father and beloved people, this was caused due to my idea of offering prayer to Govardhana Giri instead of God Indra. It is my duty to save you all from this situation which was caused by me.”
Then Shri Krishna lifted Govardhana Giri with his tiny little finger and asked everyone to get under the Govardhana Giri for shelter. The people and the animals of Vrindavan came under the Govardhana Giri. People who thought of supporting Shri Krishna in lifting the mountain placed their sticks under the Govardhana Giri.
Then Indra got more furious on seeing the little Krishna lifting the Govardhana Giri for providing shelter to his people. He made thunders and huge hail fall on Govardhana Giri to further punish the little Krishna and his people. Even a violent tornado started in that area. People got scared on seeing the violent change in the climate. Shri Krishna calmed them by playing the flute.
Seeing all this, God Indra was astounded. He realized that the little Krishna is none other than Lord Vishnu. He knew he has made a huge mistake. He then immediately made the rain stop.
Soon after the heavy storm stopped and the dark clouds went away, the sun began to shine in Vrindavan. All the water went off and everyone became ecstatic noticing the climate change.
They first requested little Krishna to go to his home as he would be very tired of lifting the Govardhana Giri for days. They told him that they would balance the Govardhana Giri with their sticks until everyone moves away from it.
Shri Krishna smiled listening to his people’s innocent and affectionate words and as requested, for a moment, he took away his little finger which was balancing the whole Govardhana Giri.
Suddenly the mountain fell a bit down and every stick that was used for balancing broke into pieces. Then Shri Krishna held the Govardhana Giri again and asked everyone to leave. After everyone moved away, Shri Krishna placed the Govardhana Giri beside.
Everyone starts praising little Krishna for saving them but little Krishna told them that it was the Govardhana Giri that saved them by providing shelter to them but not him. He wanted them to thank the mountain. After thanking, everyone left for their home.
Then arrived God Indra from heaven on his elephant Airavat to meet Lord Krishna. He begged Shri Krishna to forgive him for his arrogant and foolish behavior. Lord Krishna forgave Indra as he accepted his mistake. This way the little Shri Krishna lifted Govardhana Giri and saved Brindavan from the heavy rains.
