Importance of Education in Life: Speech on Education

The importance of education is immense. Education lets us achieve the impossible and change our fate. Nothing else can give respect to a human other than education. Education does not have any age limit.

Anyone who has a strong will to learn can continue education in their life. We all keep reading in the newspapers about 80-year-old grandmothers or grandfathers pursuing their degrees and PhDs. They inspire us in many ways.

As we move along in this article on the importance of education and speech on education, let us understand why we need education and how education helps us.

Speech on Education: What is education?

The very mention of education implies formal knowledge that we gain by attending educational institutions like school and college. Though this is true, education is a continuous process that we should never stop in life.

What is education? Education is a process of gaining knowledge from trusted sources like gurus, teachers, and books authored by reputed authors. They are a proven and reliable source of education.

A phrase from Bhagavad-Gita says gurumukhataha – meaning any education must be learned from Guru ( a trained and eminent teacher). When we learn from them, there won’t be any incompleteness in our knowledge levels.

Role of schools in imparting education

To learn education with focus, a good ambiance is important. A student should be present in a correct environment that will motivate them to focus, listen, grasp and learn the subject. Classrooms provide exactly this.

This is why students should go to school and learn in the presence of teachers. Schools and colleges provide the much necessary learning environment that is not possible at home all the time.

“He who opens a school door, closes a prison.”

Victor Hugo

In ancient India, even Kings used to send their children (princes) to Gurukuls. A gurukul is a place where Guru resides. It is located in the outskirts of the city where there is a pleasant ambiance and fresh atmosphere that helps shishyas (students) to master the subject. This explains why a formal education under the presence of Gurus (teachers) is important to anyone be it a child of a king!

How education helps a person?

The importance of education is precious. It helps when nothing else is with us. Education imparts immense confidence when we lose everything in our life.

People surround a rich man as long as they have money. They praise the rich person and talk great about them only till they have money. But when the money is lost, no one comes forward to offer respect or help the person.

On the contrary, an educated, well-behaved and knowledgeable person is respected all the time. Money may be lost or gained, but education once gained will never be lost.

According to one Sanskrit poem by Bhartruhari, the great Sanskrit poet, the importance of education is as below:

విద్య నిగూఢ గుప్తమగు విత్తము, రూపము పూరుషాళికిన్

విద్య యశస్సు, భోగకరి, విద్య గురుండు విదేశ బంధుడున్

విద్య విశిష్ట దైవతము, విద్యకు సాటి ధనంబు లేదిలన్,

విద్య నృపాల పూజితము, విద్య నెఱుంగని వాడు మర్త్యుడే..?

Meaning: Education is a secret wealth that no one can steal from a person. It imparts beauty to mankind. Education is our friend on foreign lands. A person with an education will be respected even by the kings. Education is the God that helps us in testing times. There is no wealth comparable to education. A person without education and one who looks down upon education is no better than a foolish creature.

A person with an education can change their fate and destiny. Education provides the hope and confidence to gain a better job, better livelihood, and earn respect in society.

“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

Malcolm X

Education should never be looked upon as a means to earn money. The main essence of education is to open up one’s mind and make them stable and confident in life. It widens our thought process. It helps us to see and understand why and what of everything that is happening all across the world.

Money can be made even with business or working inside jobs. But decency, respect, and confidence can be attained only through good education.

Importance of education for family

An educated person adds more reputation to a family. If an elder sibling in the house is well educated, the positive impact falls on the rest of the siblings. Thus, the whole family gets a good position in society.

If a mother of the house is educated, she can guide her children in every way. She can teach them at home, clarify their doubts and encourage them to study better to grow up as responsible adults. An educated mother is the light of the house.

If parents are uneducated and the child is well educated, the child will bring endless respect to the parents. Society talks great about the parents and the child too.

An educated child can gain a good job and bring their family out of financial problems. Education can thus change the fate of the family. There are many success stories all around us where educated children changed the financial status of their poor parents.

“If a man empties his purse into his head, no man can take it away from him. An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.”
-Ben Franklin

Importance of education for women

Many poor families deprive their girl children of education. They prefer getting them married or sending them to work at the school age. This is not a good thing to encourage. Women and girls need education more than anyone.

Women face many challenges in life. When they have a strong educational background, they will gain endless confidence to lead a life with self-assurance. They can free themselves from many atrocities like child marriages, dowry deaths, trafficking, working for meager wages, etc.

A woman can take care of her children with more self-confidence when she is educated. Women empowerment and gender equality can be attained only through women’s education.

If you educate a man, you educate an individual. But if you educate a woman, you educate a nation.

– African Proverb

Importance of education to society

Education plays a very important role in determining the face of society. Countries with educated citizens progress faster.

As educated persons, such citizens can help to maintain their country neat, focus on their health, keep distance from bad habits and work more contributing to the country’s economy. The crime rate also comes down when citizens are educated.

The nation with educated citizens ranks better in cleanliness, infrastructure, health, lifestyle, economy, social status, and many more.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”

– Nelson Mandela

Importance of education for children

Children need education without any doubt. Their tender age should not be for working in factories rather they should go to school to gain knowledge.

Sending children to work for money may help the family only temporarily. But it will spoil the child’s future and ruin their life. They will lose the respect and the dignity they would attain if they are educated.

“If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.”
-Andy McIntyre

Thus, though it is difficult for poor families to send their children to schools, parents should understand that education will change the fate of their family and the child.

They should send them to schools where the government is providing them with all the benefits including books, lunch, and everything. Thus, no child should be deprived of education. Education is the birthright of every human.

Importance of education in life

Life is full of challenges. You never know when you lose money, health, or anyone dear to you. Education gives you the confidence to sail such testing times. When you lose everything and no one stays with you to help, you can undoubtedly use your education to move ahead in the dark times of your life. That is the confidence an educated person will attain.

Education makes us self-dependent. It imparts clarity of what is right and what is wrong. Thus, it improves our decision-making process and guides us towards the good.

Education is everything- education is your power, education is your way in life for whatever you want to do.

– Ciara

Education has no age limits

As we understood, education has no age limit. Just because a woman’s education is discontinued due to marriage or personal reasons, there is no rule that she should not study after marriage or when it is possible for her. The family should understand her intention and encourage her education. Similarly, there are many old women and retired persons who enroll themselves in degrees, schools, and colleges. This indicates that nothing can stop a strong will that is intended to continue education.

“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.”

– Henry Ford

Education never stops

Just because we attain one degree or a Ph.D., it doesn’t mean that we know everything. What we learn is only an ounce of the ocean of education. Education is a continuous process. We should keep updating our skills and knowledge as time changes. It will be beneficial in our personal and professional lives. Doing so will keep us updated and sets us ready to meet the ups and downs of the job market.

“Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance.”
-Will Durant

Education should impart humility

Education should impart humility and humbleness to a person. It should never make one proud or arrogant. An educated person should never look down on another less educated person or illiterate. If possible, they should guide them in learning. That is the real meaning of being educated.

A true scholar always lives like a full leaf served with all food items. An empty brain with no knowledge keeps talking more and more just to show off.

“The only person who is educated is the one who has learned how to learn …and change.”
-Carl Rogers

Education is the greatest gift for a human

The knowledge gained by education is the true gift for any human. It can help them to change the world and achieve the impossible. If you have money and want to gift something to a poor person, educate them. Sponsor their education. This would be the greatest gift you could ever give to them.

“Despise school and remain a fool.”
-German proverb
